Natasha Lester, Author

Nice to meet you! Sit back, relax and grab a cup of tea. I hope you enjoy looking around my site.

I’m Natasha Lester. My fourth novel, Her Mother’s Secret, was published in March 2017. It’s my second foray into historical fiction, which I love, after publishing the bestseller A Kiss from Mr Fitzgerald in 2016. I love yoga, shoes, teaching writing, red lipstick and being a mum to my three kids. If you’re after my media and publicity bio, you can click here.

My Dream of Becoming a Writer

I came late to writing. When I was a child, I loved nothing more than to read, to escape into the world of a story. I also loved to write little books and poems and stories and wondered what it would be like to make readers feel the way I did whenever I read a book.

But when I left high school, there were no creative writing degrees at the universities in Perth where I lived. So I didn’t know how to become a writer. I ended up doing a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Marketing and Public Relations. For the next 10 years I worked in marketing for companies like Harlequin UK, choosing handsome heroes for the covers of books, and for L’Oreal in Australia as the Marketing Manager for Maybelline. It was great fun; I had more lipsticks than anyone could ever need. But it wasn’t what I really wanted to do.

So, one day, I quit my fabulous job and went back to uni to study Creative Writing.

From One Small Poem to Three Novels

I started small. The first thing I ever submitted for publication was a poem. And it was accepted! It was the best $100 I’d ever earned.

Of course it wasn’t always that easy.  I had three babies during the five years of writing my first book and waiting for it to be published. I often wondered what the hell I was doing. I constantly doubted that my book would ever be read by anyone. But I loved writing. So I kept going through all the babies and all the doubt and all the rejections. And finally, someone believed in my first book as much as I did and agreed to publish it.

I still remember the feeling of going into a book store and seeing my book on the shelf for the first time. I was so excited that I took photos! What is Left Over After, my first book, was published by Fremantle Press in 2010, followed by If I Should Lose You in 2012.

And Now …

Since then, I’ve switched to writing historical fiction and my third book, A Kiss from Mr Fitzgerald, was published in 2016, followed by Her Mother’s Secret in 2017.

I also teach lots of writing courses because my other passion is helping people achieve their dream of writing a book. If you’re interested in booking me for a writing workshop or author talk for your library, writers’ centre or other organisation, here is some more information.

I hope you enjoy escaping into the world of one of my books and thanks for visiting!
